چکیده

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a preferred technique for assessing the environmental impact of products considering all environmental aspects over the full product life cycle. However, a number of drawbacks limit a continual and pro-active application of LCA in the design process. Indicators have been proposed as an alternative approach to LCA. This paper provides a brief survey of indicator approaches, and distinguishes three major categories: environmental indicators, environmental impact drivers, and environmental estimators. The environmental indicator approach reduces the extensive data gathering efforts connected to tracing all life cycle processes and their related elementary flows by making use of average data for common sections of a product life cycle. Environmental impact drivers can be defined as technical product attributes for which a strong relationship with the product's environmental performance is presumed or proven. The environmental estimator approach uses these readily available environmental impact drivers, which are subsequently mutually weighted and summed in order to estimate an environmental performance indicator. Finally, a framework is presented in which the indicator approaches are considered the core of a Product Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS). This framework is illustrated with the example of a green design and supply chain management system for railway vehicles.

A framework for energy use indicators and their reporting in life cycle assessment.

Energy use is a common impact category in life cycle assessment (LCA). Many different energy use indicators are used in LCA studies, accounting for energy use in different ways. Often, however, the choice behind which energy use indicator is applied is poorly described and motivated. To contribute to a more purposeful selection of energy use indicators and to ensure consistent and transparent r...

Dealing with Emergy Algebra in the Life Cycle Assessment Framework

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) represents one of the four steps of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which is a standardized procedure (ISO 14040:2006) to estimate the environmental impacts generated by the production, use and delivery of goods and services and final waste disposal. The calculation of emergy using LCI databases is acknowledged to be of great advantage to improve the accu...

Optimum Structural Design with Discrete Variables Using League Championship Algorithm

In this paper a league championship algorithm (LCA) is developed for structural optimization where the optimization variables are of discrete type and the set of the values possibly obtained by each variable is also given. LCA is a relatively new metaheuristic algorithm inspired from sport championship process. In LCA, each individual can choose to approach to or retreat from other individuals ...

Assessing measurement error in surveys using latent class analysis: application to self-reported illicit drug use in data from the Iranian Mental Health Survey.

Latent class analysis (LCA) is a method of assessing and correcting measurement error in surveys. The local independence assumption in LCA assumes that indicators are independent from each other condition on the latent variable. Violation of this assumption leads to unreliable results. We explored this issue by using LCA to estimate the prevalence of illicit drug use in the Iranian Mental Healt...

Life Cycle Inventory Analysis of Recycling: Mathematical and Graphical Frameworks

A mathematical framework of the life cycle inventory (LCI) analysis in life cycle assessment (LCA) of recycling is systematically reviewed with the aid of graphical interpretation. First, the zero burden approach, which has been applied to LCI analyses of waste management systems, is theoretically justified in terms of relative comparison of waste management options. As recycling is a multi-fun...
